The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) says the taxi industry must emerge from the Taxi Lekgotla with an efficient customer-oriented taxi service.
Santaco president Philip Taaibosch was speaking at the industry’s body last day of the 3day executive committee meeting.
“Unless we emerge from the Taxi Lekgotla with an efficient customer-oriented taxi service, the taxi industry will be showing little appreciation for those who made it what it is today,” said Taaibosch.

As an industry that generates revenue more than R40 billion per annum and consumes more than 2.1 billion litres of fuel per annum, the industry is tipped to become a model for real empowerment.
Taaibosch added that it is time every taxi driver is given training and has a formal employment contract so that they can be governed by a code of conduct which, when they contravene, necessary steps must be taken.
SANTACO also calls for a better taxi rank.
“We want taxi ranks that reflect the dignity of our commuters. There cannot be a difference between Gautrain and BRT stations and the taxi ranks.”

“Indeed! We need to find a model that reduces operational costs and by consequence make taxi affordable to the commuter.”
