Volkswagen is expanding the Crafter 35 line up with the addition of two new models, the 2.0 TDI Automatic and the 2.0 TDI 4MOTION
The Crafter 35 Panel Van 2.0 TDI Automatic combines all the world-class safety and convenience features of the Crafter 35 with the convenience of an automatic transmission.
The eight-speed automatic transmission utilises a torque convertor, which transforms the Crafter into a vehicle that is easy to drive all day long, which is typical of the usage pattern of these types of commercial vehicles.
The automatic transmission facilitates stress and fatigue-free driving in Stop and Go Traffic, making it perfect for use as a workhorse, delivery vehicle or taxi that spends its life in traffic and does multiple stops on a daily basis.
The fact that the driver no longer has to worry about using a clutch or being in the right gear takes the guess work out of driving across difficult terrain or manoeuvring with high payloads and trailers of up to 3000kg.
The automatic transmission is also kinder on the pocket. Fuel consumption is reduced thanks to an adaptive shifting strategy in comparison with drivers who are not focusing on the optimum shifting points at all times. Furthermore the smooth shifting nature of this gearbox ensures maximum comfort for crew and the payload. The optimum gear shifting strategy has been refined no matter the payload thanks to a load-adaptive programming.
The transmission utilised in this model of the Crafter is the first 8-speed automatic gearbox with torque convertor for transversely mounted front-engined vehicles in the commercial vehicle sector. It features a robust design to meet the requirements of commercial vehicles while transmission ratios are adapted for optimum fuel consumption and performance. A short first gear ensures hassle free starts with heavy loads, on inclines or when towing a trailer. On the other end of the spectrum a long 8th gear ensures low rpms at higher speeds for fuel-efficient driving.
The front-wheel drive drivetrain used in the Crafter 35 Panel Van 2.0TDI Automatic offers a number of advantages including a 100mm lower loading sill, class-leading loading height, bigger headroom within the load area and a larger payload, with this model being capable of carrying cargo of up to 1 487kg.
These attributes make the Crafter 35 Panel Van 2.0TDI Automatic perfect for use as commercial passenger transportation in the taxi or hospitality industry, medical transport and emergency services and of course courier and logistics services.
Both new models in the Crafter range feature the same powerful yet frugal 1 968cc engine that boasts 103 kW and 340Nm and fuel consumption as low as 7.3 litres/100km.
The Crafter 35 Panel Van 2.0 TDI 4MOTION offers all the safety and practicality features of the Crafter but with the added peace of mind that all-wheel drive offers.
The Crafter 35 Panel Van 2.0 TDI 4MOTION is based on the front-wheel drive model, but adds a four-wheel drive coupling that delivers power to the rear axle as well. 4MOTION is an intelligent permanent four-wheel drive system, which means that during normal driving the majority of drive is via the front wheels, in order to maximise fuel economy. In low grip situations, up to 60% of engine power can be sent to the rear wheels, ensuring traction in tricky situations or when doing modest off-road work.
Advantages of the 4MOTION model include traction in all conditions and the ability to tow a trailer of up to 3000kg across these tricky conditions. This model is ideal for special applications like an off-road camper, commercial passenger transporter in rural areas or emergency transport and has a payload of 1 393kg.
The six-speed manual gearbox utilised in this model has been further developed from the T6 gearbox to offer shifting comfort similar to that of passenger cars while the transmission ratios have been adapted for optimum fuel consumption and performance. The manual gearbox of the 4MOTION model is easily manipulated via an ergonomically positioned gear lever.
The Crafter 35 Panel Van 2.0 TDI 4MOTION is equipped with a fifth generation four-wheel drive coupling. An electronic rear differential lock with 100% locking action and Hill Descent Control which assists in driving down slopes in a safe, controlled, manner are available as options.
All models in the new Crafter range have been fitted with innovative safety features designed to deliver all-round protection. Essential systems such as ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) combined with Brake Assist and Crosswind Assist, Multi-Collision Braking (MCB), Traction Control System (TCS) and Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) are all standard fitment in the Crafter. Whether you are moving people, cargo or both, the Crafter is equipped to keep them safe and secure on the road with a driver and passenger airbag as standard, three-point seat belts, remote controlled central locking and an optional anti-theft alarm.
The Crafter 35 Panel Van 2.0 TDI Automatic and Crafter 35 Panel Van 2.0 TDI 4MOTION are expected to join the Crafter 35 model range towards the end of 2020 and the retail price of both models includes a 5 year / 120 000km service plan.
